Kurt Asle Arvesen was involved in a 70kph crash with a kid who ran across the road in front of him in today’s stage of the Vuelta. Karsten Kroon’s latest twitter comments convey the fear and shock of that scenario better than what I had originally written about this.
Amazingly both are ok though the damage to Kurt’s knee may scupper his chances of continuing the race. Initially he did climb off the bike but got back on (google translated inaccuracy: “Sky-bus was accidentally near the accident site, so I was inside the bus and had taken off my suit and helmet and was on track to break the race. But then I thought “no, heck does, I can not give me now”).
Both the kid and Kurt are so very lucky the outcome was not worse. Stay safe when watching races, folks. The cyclists are always faster than you think they’ll be - don’t go nipping across the road until you’re absolutely and completely sure there are no riders or race traffic. Safer for them, safer for you.
