magentacrayon asked: Okay, I have a question about bicycles in general, not completely cycling. But oh well. Do you know anything about the quality of Huffy bikes? I'm thinking about asking for one for my upcoming birthday. I'm looking at just a cruiser, nothing too serious. Thanks a lot! :)

As a disclaimer, I want to stress that neither co-mod Natalie or I know much about bikes themselves, we’re mostly into on watching races (as many as we can and as often as we can). That being said, I’ll do my best to answer this question.

What I know about Huffy isn’t much, except that they’re pretty cheap, though they range in price, and you can buy them almost anywhere. If you do a basic search at Amazon, there are several different bikes and a lot of reviews, the average seems to be 3-star rating. I also found a Popular Mechanics article comparing three bikes (a super cheap Huffy, a more expensive Raleigh and a really, really expensive Guru). Most of the big bike review sites don’t review Huffy bikes.

Other options would be to peruse garage sales and see if you can find any popular/expensive/quality bikes that are on sale for relativity cheap. You may also want to check out your local sporting goods store, they may have someone on staff who is knowledgeable about bikes. And, of course, you can always visit your local bike shop to find out what they have and any advice they can give you.

For what it’s worth, my mother (she’s in her 60s and rides 15-20 miles every couple of days), rides a Huffy she got at Costco.

Good luck! And if anyone else has a good answer to magentacrayon’s question, please feel free to let us know and we’ll post it.
