Olympics 2012 | Men’s Road Race
Small squad sizes and no race radios made this race a bit of a lottery with the expected bunch sprint never appearing. Great Britain’s plan to try to control the peloton in a similar fashion to Worlds last year in Copenhagen was too difficult to manage with just a team of five.
Even with additional help from Eisel and Schorn from Austria, teams like Switzerland, US, Spain and Italy kept the race aggressive and the task to pull the breakaway back proved too great. Maybe if Germany had pitched in to help the predicted bunch sprint would have happened but in the end, it was an unexpected breakway win!
